“Tips for anyone going through Divorce,
from a Family Lawyer’s perspective….”
Let’s admit that, going through Divorce is difficult for everyone, people tend to make mistakes which makes this process even more difficult. I always give people the following tips:
Don’t rely on advice from your divorced friend.
Every case is different and unique, the divorced friend’s case may not apply to yours. A Family Lawyer can help you avoid the traps you could never know about on your own. Should I leave the house, should I take the money out of the joint bank account, should I introduce my new partner to my children, should I open up a new business with the matrimonial savings? You will have so many questions, only a Family Lawyer will be able to answer your questions.
Choose your Family Lawyer wisely.
If you are going to rely on your Family Lawyer throughout the most difficult time of your life, then your Family Lawyer should be a good fit for your, who you feel you can work with. There are aggressive litigation Family Lawyers, who like to take all the matters to the court, and then there are Family Lawyers, who would like to resolve the matters out of court. The type of Family Lawyer you choose will have a big impact on the outcome you achieve.
Consider Mediation.
Remember the old days, when the elders in the families were used to resolve the disputes. Yes, the same concept still exists. It’s called Mediation. There are alternatives to litigation that can save you time and money. You and your spouse can work together to come to an early resolution, should you Consider Mediation to settle your differences. Mediation means you can avoid having to go to Court.
Seek Emotional Guidance
It is normal to be traumatised when you are going through a separation. Everyone is different and everyone processes their loss and grief differently. I, as your Family Lawyer, love to listen to you, however, we, Family Lawyers do not have the training to emotionally assist you. But, a Trained Family and Relationship Counsellor can assist you to process your emotions and can also provide invaluable guidance in relation to dealing with not only your stress and anxiety, but also can guide you in how to deal with your ex-partner, and how to assist the children at this difficult time.
